May is the month of equality in Kraków and of course we didn’t let that pass unnoticed. In our last monthly Tuesday meeting in April, we, as volunteers, started to plan a workshop about equality to raise awareness about the topic.
So last Thursday, on May 21st, we met in the multicultural center in Kraków for a “speak date” about Equality. It was a public event and the group of IB Polska volunteers was joined by other young people. We got together and after getting to know eachother a bit through games instructed by Kristina and Svenja, we started to talk about the (very big) topic of equality.

All of us sat together in pairs of two and after reading a quote and some questions, we talked freely about the topic for a few minutes. Then we rotated. This created a very open space where everyone talked to a variety of people naturally.
First of all, we talked about gender equality. A topic so prominent everywhere, even in everyday life, that everyone could say something about it.
The next subject was immigration. Since most of the people at the workshop had experienced migrating in one form or another, it was very helpful to have the room to talk about it and exchange with others.
We continued to cover more parts of equality such as LGBTQIA+ equality and accessibility for people with disabilities.

When we reflected on the workshop later, everyone noticed how rare it is to talk about the last topic in society even though it is so important and affects so many people’s lives.

In general, we agreed that people judge or a scared of what they don’t know, so raising awareness and giving visibility to minority groups and topics of equality, is a great way to help to create a world that is equal.
And the workshop was a nice start on that.

Because it is just like Malala Yousafzai said:

“There should be no discrimination against languages people speak, skin color, or religion.”

Or discrimination against any of the other things mentioned above 🙂
