For the spring 2014 IB offers a very interesting international Literacy Workshop. The workshop will last one week and feature 12 educators from across Europe.
The substantive part is based on the Six Thinking Hats method by de Bono. Edward de Bono is a world renown authority on the thinking process. He is a psychologist and physician with a PhD degree in medicine. He is also the founder of the Cognitive Research Trust in Cambridge, the Center for the Study of Thinking and the Supranational Independent Thinking Organization. His program of direct teaching of thinking has been in use in thousands of schools around the world. Many of the leading corporations, including IBM, Shell, ITT etc have benefited from his experience. The Six Thinking Hats method is a creative way of problem solving. It allows us to direct and control the thinking process by making it conscious. The main problem with thinking is that it is unstructured and unfocused. The method allows us to direct the thought in one of six distinct directions (rather than having to deal with information, emotion, discernment, optimistic response and creativity all at once). Moreover, The Six Thinking Hats method provides effective communication and teamwork skills.
The first day will be focused on introducing the methods, getting to know each other better and breaking the ice. For the next three days during morning sessions the participants will become familiar with six tools of information understanding: fact focus, emotion focus, development focus, information criticism, creative attitude and synthesizing focus. During afternoon sessions, the participants will take a closer look on six European projects on adult literacy education. Final day of the workshop will be devoted to organising the gathered knowledge on the method. To sum up, the participants will take part in panel discussion on the issue of literacy education in Europe along with researchers of the oldest university in Poland ? the Jagiellonian University.
Expected results. The workshop participants will learn the method supporting their education work in the field of literacy education. They will learn six practical tools, allowing an easier knowledge understanding and better usage of it. What is more, the participants will also learn how to diagnose the way in which their students use the information. They will also become acquainted with ways of using the method in organisation management, conducting meetings, programme discussions and organising information databases. Workshop participation will bring clarity in information chaos on literacy education in Europe. The participants will take a closer look on six projects on adult literacy education and exchange professional experience with Polish university researchers. They will spend time in a multinational group of professionals on our hospitable Polish soil.
